South Korean battery cell producer SK Innovation has signed a deal with Chinese EV manufacturer Xpeng to supply battery cells from its Huizhou, Guangdong plant. 

 

Production capacity at the plant currently stands at 10 GWh. According to media reports, the contract was signed in July and will see SK supplying cells with 80pc nickel content to the Chinese automaker. 

 

This agreement and supply support Xpeng’s current major capacity expansion plans per reports. In August, Xpeng began constructing its third plant in Wuhan, which is expected to have a production capacity of 100,000 electric cars per year. 

 

The company also made plans in the same month to boost capacity at its first Zhaogaing plant by 100,000 cars to reach 200,000 cars annually. Xpeng’s second plant, located in Guangzhou, started construction in September last year.
