XALT Energy and the ReCell Center are partnering to create a sustainable lithium-ion battery recycling process. 


The US Department of Energy’s Argonne and Oak Ridge National Laboratories proposed a research program for creating a process that separates and restores damaged nickel-manganese-cobalt foil coatings for use in new batteries.


Jeff Spangenberger, ReCell Center’s director, stated that XALT, through this partnership, has provided the coated foil scrap and expended pouch cells required for this technology, which has allowed the company to carry out the recycling program.


The companies also intend to cut costs for battery manufacturers by reducing the amount of raw material necessary, in consideration of the expected increase in global demand for lithium-ion batteries to 1,700 GWh in 2030. The process should also help ease the burden on supply chains in supplying this demand.
