German carmaker Volkswagen (VW) will halt production at its Mexico unit until May 19, while its Slovakian plant will suspend operations from Apr 29-May 7, due to the global semiconductor shortage.

VW’s Mexico plant will suspend the output of its SUV model Tiguan from May 6-16 and the Jetta model from May 3-19, the carmaker indicated in a media statement on Tuesday.

The company’s unit in Bratislava, Slovakia, will cut back on producing recreational all-terrain vehicles. The plant’s small-car production will be unaffected, according to the car manufacturer. Volkswagen’s Slovakian factory is one of its larger ones, employing 12,000 people and produces models like the Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne, and Audi Q7 and Q8.

Volkswagen had warned of more cutback earlier this week, as it continues to be affected by the ongoing semiconductor chip crunch.
