Swedish electric truck maker Volta Trucks has chosen MAN SE’s divested manufacturing plant in Steyr, Austria as its production base.

According to media reports, the plant was previously owned by the Volkswagen Group, MAN’s parent company. It has now been sold to Steyr Automotive, a newly formed venture headed by former Magna executive, Siegfried Wolf. The latter will continue to manufacture trucks for MAN until 2023 after which it is looking for new automotive contracts.

Volta has an order book of 5,000 16-tonne EV units, which it must complete and deliver in 2023, before the banning of diesel trucks in France comes into effect in 2024. Over the next couple of years, Volta plans to unveil four different sizes of its electric truck models and reach an annual production of 27,000 units by 2025.
