Ferrous scrap imports into Vietnam decreased by 41pc to 321,623mt in February compared to 545,907mt in the same month last year, according to the country’s Customs data. Its ferrous scrap imports were also 28pc lower compared to 413,248mt in January.

 

Vietnam’s shipments from Australia tripled in February to 26,399mt from 9,879mt in February 2020; however, they were 43pc lower from 46,068mt in the prior month. In terms of volumes, Japan remained the biggest exporter for scrap to Vietnam at 223,544mt, up 26pc from 177,175mt last month but down by 37pc from 354,406mt in February 2020.

 

Imports from Canada were 49pc higher at 6,986mt from 4,686mt in the same month last year. On a monthly basis, imports from Canada rose 87pc from 3,728mt in the previous month. Imports from the US and Chile witnessed the steepest monthly drop by 65pc and 80pc, respectively. In terms of volume, Vietnam imported 28,520mt from the US in February as compared to 78,243mt in the previous month. Imports from Chile in February were 1,955mt as compared to 9,599mt in January.

 

Vietnam’s iron and steel imports in February were flat from the previous year at 1.02mn mt. Full-year 2020 iron and steel imports were 13.2mn mt. In February, The country  exported 636,710mt of iron and steel products, down by 8pc on an annual basis and 34pc lower from 967,913mt in the previous month.
