Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

British carmaker Vauxhall Motors decided to temporarily shut production at its factory in Ellesmere Port, England for six shifts this week.

According to media reports, the decision was made due to lower market demand for c-segment hatchback models in the UK and Europe. The plant produces 187,000 units of the Astra hatchback model each year and employs around 2,000 workers.

The plant’s future is uncertain as the parent company Stellantis determines whether it can produce electric vehicles at Ellesmere soon. The company has decided that the production of the Astra will begin in Ruesselsheim, Germany from 2022.
