Brazilian miner Vale has halted iron ore mining and production at its Timbopeba plant and Algeria mine in the Mariana complex of Brazil, following an evacuation order from local authorities.
The mine and plant produce around 40,000mt of iron ore per day, Vale indicated in a statement on Friday.
The company has also halted the Fabrica Nova railroad network that transports iron ore produced at Timbopeba. The area’s regional superintendent issued the closure notice as a precaution against a potential dam burst on the Xingu river, though Vale noted that there is no imminent risk from the incident.
