US shipments from domestic steel mills dropped by 15.8pc to 81mn nt (73mn mt) in 2020, compared to 96.1mn nt in 2019, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute’s (AISI’s) 2020 Annual Statistical Report (ASR).

 

The report released on Jun 30 indicated raw steel output in the US declined by 17.1pc to 80.2mn nt in 2020, compared to 96.7mn nt of raw steel production in the prior year. 

 

Overall steel imports fell by 21pc in 2020 compared to 2019, while finished steel imports dropped by 23pc during the same period to take an 18pc share of apparent steel consumption. The report also confirmed that US steel imports have declined over the past three consecutive years. 

 

The ASR showed that the construction and automotive sectors have maintained their position as the foremost end-user markets for US shipped steel products.
