US iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes decreased by 22.9pc to 41.2mn mt in 2020 from the previous year, according to the Lake Carriers Association (LCA). Shipments loaded in 2020 declined by 21pc in the five-year average.


In 2020, the port of Two Harbors, Minnesota processed 32.3pc of total US shipments at 13.3mn mt followed by Duluth, Minnesota port, which processed 8mn mt or 19.5pc; Superior, Wisconsin, which processed 7mn mt or 17.1pc; Presque Isle, Michigan, which processed 5.4mn mt or 13.1pc; and Silver Bay, Minnesota with 4.4mn mt or 10.6pc. 


From the Ohio ports, Cleveland port shipped 2mn mt or 4.9pc of total shipments followed by the Ashtabula port with 1mn mt or 2.5pc shipped, the data indicated. 


Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes declined by 3.8pc to 4.7mn mt in December against the same month in 2019. Shipments were also down by 7.2pc in the five-year average for the month.
