US ferrous scrap exports increased 42pc this April to 1.5mn mt from 1.05mn mt in the same month of 2020, according to US Census Bureau data.
Shipments to Malaysia, the largest importer in April 2021 jumped 6 times to 225,964mt from 32,342mt a year ago. Turkey followed at 205,372mt as the second-largest importer, but shipments to this destination declined by 17pc from 246,034mt. Vietnam’s imports soared by 291pc in April, with the country accepting 180,999mt of ferrous scrap, compared with 46,279mt in the same month of 2020.
Coasts
East coast ferrous scrap exports amounted to 628,167mt, down from 926,770mt in March 2021. The West Coast shipped out 446,185mt up from 204,141mt of ferrous scrap in the prior month.
North America
Canada imported 36,066mt of US ferrous scrap in April this year, which was a 1.4pc decline from the prior month. Meanwhile, Mexico’s imports decreased by 12pc annually to 169,001mt.
In the first four months of 2021, the US exported 214,665mt of ferrous scrap to Canada, a rise of 13pc from 189,465mt during the same prior-year period. Mexico has imported 931,866mt in the year till April, up 45pc from 640,642mt during the same timeframe in 2020.
