US ferrous scrap exports declined on an annual basis in April, but Turkey, Mexico, and Taiwan remained the top-three shipping destinations for a second straight month.

 

Total exports decreased by 20pc in April to 1.1mn mt from 1.3mn mt during the corresponding month in 2019, according to US Census Bureau data. However, US ferrous exports grew by 12pc to 5.2mn mt through the first fourth months of 2020 from 4.6mn mt during the same period last year.

 

Exports to Turkey rose by 22pc to 246,034mt in April from 201,173 during the same month in 2019. Year-to-date exports to the country rose by 22pc to 1.3mn mt from from 1.02mt during the first four months of 2019.

 

US ferrous exports to Mexico reached 192,989mt in April 2020, surging by 78pc from 108,404mt during the same month last year. Through the first four months of 2020, US exports to Mexico reached 640,642mt, rising by 57pc from 408,887mt during the same four-month period in 2019.

 

US ferrous shipments to Taiwan rose by 15pc in April to 144,472mt from 125,464mt during the same month in 2019. Through the first fourth months of 2020, exports to Taiwan rose by 5pc to 526,549mt from 503,732mt during the same four-month period a year ago.

 

US East Coast

East Coast ferrous scrap exports reached 477,855mt in April from 780,500mt in the month prior. Year-to-date, 2.4mn mt of ferrous scrap has been exported from the US East Coast.

 

US West Coast

West Coast ferrous scrap exports hit 279,107mt in April, rising from 249,408mt in March. In the first four months of 2020, 1.5mn mt of ferrous scrap was exported from the US West Coast. 

 

North America

US ferrous scrap exports to North American countries reached 208,803mt in April, increasing from 223,014mt a month earlier. Through the first four months of the year, North American countries received 830,107mt of US ferrous scrap shipments.

 

Canada received 15,814mt of US ferrous scrap in April, up from 62,688mt one month earlier. Through the first four months of the year, the US exported 250,782mt of ferrous scrap to Canada.

 

Mexico imported 192,989mt of US ferrous scrap in April, up from 160,326mt one month earlier. Through the first four months of 2020, the US shipped 743,832mt of ferrous scrap to Mexico.
