In May, UK produced 54,962 cars, 52.6pc lower than May 2019 levels according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). In May 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, UK had produced just 5,314 cars.

In Jan-May, 429,826 units were produced, up 95.3pc from the year prior, notes SMMT. The number, however, is 22.9pc lower compared to the same period in 2019.

Hindrances such as supply shortage of materials, notably the semiconductors, have impacted the recovery of the auto sector.

Electric Vehicle production has gathered speed with 19.2pc of all UK cars were battery or hybrid. About 83.6pc of the country’s car production was meant for export markets to date in 2021. The EU remains its top export destination and accounts for 56pc of all exports, followed by the US with 18.3pc and China with 7.3pc of total exports.

Car production in the UK remains impacted due to the global semiconductor shortage, according to SMMT Chief Executive.
