US President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on Tuesday formally lifting tariffs on unwrought aluminium imports from Canada. Trump administration, however, warned of reinstating tariffs in case of a surge in aluminium exports from Canada through the countries Northern border.
Earlier, Trump had removed tariffs on imports of unwrought aluminium from Canada in 2019, only to slap it back in August this year. The standoff had resulted in trade tension between the two neighbours.
The proclamation came after the US Trade Representative’s office made an agreement with Canada to exclude aluminium imports from Canada from 10pc national security tariffs under section 232, retroactive to Sep 1.
