Thailand imported a total of 156,285mt of ferrous scrap in June, 149pc higher than June 2020. Thailand mills consumed more scrap due to strong billet export orders in the Asian markets. Thailand’s June overall export orders increased with an improvement in global demand. Exports remain a key driver of Thailand’s growth. Ferrous scrap imports witnessed strong growth in May and June after falling in April against the corresponding months in 2020.
Top ferrous exporting countries
Thailand imported a major portion of ferrous scrap from Australia, about 31,004mt, 286pc more than June 2020, and 48pc higher than May. Japan followed with 20,150mt, 348pc higher than a year ago and 98pc more than May. Ferrous scrap from the US jumped 40pc to 15,140mt in June from a year ago and 6pc from May levels. In Jan-June, ferrous scrap imports rose by 22pc to 796,222mt from the prior-year period.
Aluminum imports
Thailand’s imports for aluminum scrap increased by 37pc in June over the prior-year June to 29,900mt, also higher by 4pc from May. Cambodia was the top exporting country with 8,286mt, a rise of 52pc over June 2020. Thailand imported 5,573mt of aluminum scrap from the US, 66pc higher than June last year. Myanmar became the third-highest exporter in June with 1,958mt, a surge of 727pc from a year ago. In January-June, Thailand imported 181,054mt of aluminum scrap, 42pc higher than the same period last year.
