Thailand’s ferrous scrap imports declined by 6pc to 135,901mt in January from 144,586mt in the same month last year, according to the country’s Customs data. The Asian nation’s imports, also fell by 7pc from 146,098mt imported in December. 


The US was the top exporter to Thailand in January, with shipments increasing by 632pc to 42,074mt in January compared to 5,751mt in December. Scrap exports from the US to Thailand grew by 14pc from 37,006mt in January 2019. 


Thailand’s scrap imports from South Korea and Singapore fell by 3pc and 68pc to 6,423mt and 3,824mt, respectively, in January from the previous month. However, compared to January 2020, exports from both these nations to Thailand increased by 524pc and 8,605pc, respectively.


Among Latin American countries, Thailand’s imports from Costa Rica increased by 31pc to 4,754mt last month from 3,626mt in January 2020, and grew by 14pc from 4,182mt in December 2020. Other major exporters of ferrous scrap to the Asian nation in January included Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, and Puerto Rico.
