Ternium’s Pesqueria new hot-rolling mill expansion in Nuevo Leon, Mexico is expected to increase shipments of steel slabs by 50-66pc from Brazil via the Port of Brownsville.
The expanded plant is expected to reach full capacity by late 2021. Once capacity utilization reaches optiumum levels, steel slab demand from the plant is expected to increase to 4.5-5mn mt from the current 3mn mt throughput. The Port of Brownsville ordered two new harbor cranes in early 2020 in preparation for Ternium’s expansion and increased activity in its scrap division.
Ternium plans to expand services to the automotive industry, home appliances, machinery, construction, and energy sectors. The latest steelmaking technologies will allow Ternium to expand its range of product offerings. Once the new mill reaches full-scale production, Ternium Pequeria will have an annual capacity of 4.4mn mt hot-rolled, 1.6mn mt cold-rolled, 830,000mt of hot-dipped galvanized, and 120,000mt of pre-painted steel products.
