Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Tata Steel Europe will join hands with Korean steelmaker Posco to provide steel tubes for the Virgin Hyperloop transportation system.

Both companies will work together on research to optimize the design and structure of steel tubes used in the high-speed system to minimize friction. High quality steel grades resulting from the joint effort will furnish large-diameter pipes, spanning up to 3.5 meters across. However, neither company has disclosed any volumes for the project.

The Virgin Hyperloop is a pod-shaped transport system using low-pressure tubes as a medium to lower the energy required to propel the train like pods. The company recently conducted its first passenger test and worked on sites in America, Europe, and South Asia. It has also received support from the US Department of Commerce.
