Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emirates Steel, a steel plant in the Middle East, for the development of a large-scale green hydrogen steel production project, the first of its kind in Mena.
Both companies plan to consider the use of green hydrogen in boosting clean steel production, which will reduce energy use and create a sustainable manufacturing process.
The agreement outlines project design and expansion strategies to meet the expected increase in international demand for low carbon steel. The partnership also aims to provide solutions for reducing the carbon footprint in several sectors, including construction, transportation, and industrial production.
Emirates Steel is a world steel Climate Action Program member and is the first steel manufacturer in the Mena region to be verified for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) documentation. The company produces 2mn mt of rebar and 550,000mt of wire rods annually.
