SRN Mineração has received the preliminary environmental license from the Department of the Environment and Water Resources to begin iron ore extraction at its mine in Piaui Brazil.

The company has forecasted iron ore extraction of around 300,000mt per year from this site in the initial phase before reaching 2mn mt annually for 64pc iron ore, it noted in a statement on Monday.

This project is expected to be completed in eight to twelve months and will create around 2,000 direct and indirect jobs when finished, SRN indicated. The Piaui extraction process will be completely dry, through magnetic separation and crushing, to reduce the environmental impact from the use of water in the region.

SRN’s project is located in the municipalities of Dirceu Arcoverde, São Raimundo Nonato, and São Lourenço do Piauí.
