South Africa’s manufacturing rose by 12.5pc in June from June 2020, according to Statistic South Africa. The rise was higher than the previous forecast of 11.3pc, suggest media reports. From May, however, seasonally adjusted manufacturing production declined 0.7pc. In May, production has increased by 36.3pc from the prior-year period.
Positive contributors included motor vehicles, parts & accessories, and other transport equipment, which rose 84.1pc and contributed 4.9 percentage points. Manufacturing production of basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products, and machinery rose by 19.2pc and contributed 3.5 percentage points to June’s tally.
In the second quarter, seasonally adjusted production fell by 1pc from Q1 2021, with six of ten manufacturing divisions reporting a negative growth.
Manufacturing sales in June fell 0.3pc from May.
