The full construction of Steel Dynamics’ (SDI’s) construction of its new $1.9bn electric-arc furnace (EAF) powered mill for flat-rolled steel production in Sinton, Texas will revive in 2021.

In July, the company reported that the construction had begun earlier in 2020 and that the start plan was on track. However, now full construction is scheduled to resume in early next year, SDI said, following some delays the company faced in March and April as equipment suppliers were slightly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The steelmaker is still on course to begin producing 3mn nt of steel per year, by the middle of 2021, in line with its original plan.

SDI’s yearly steel production capacity will increase by 25pc with the addition of the Sinton plant. The facility will be equipped with a galvanizing line with 550,000nt of yearly capacity and a paint line with 250,000nt of coating capacity per year.
