Salzgitter has partnered with Avacon Natur GmbH on an energy project, to produce hydrogen that, in turn, will be used to make green or eco-friendly steel.
The energy project, named Salzgitter Wind Hydrogen, involves constructing a PEM electrolysis plant and seven turbines, the latter of which are slated for completion this fall, and will have an overall output of about 30MW. The hydrogen will be used to produce iron ore in lieu of carbon.
The €50mn ($55mn) project will have three of the turbines built at the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH-operated integrated steelworks, with the other four on surrounding company property.
