Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Steel Authority of India’s (Sail) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has secured an order to supply over 6,000mt of special grade plates to a European country, according to media reports

The plant would be exporting CE-marked plates meeting the European standards introduced for regulating goods within the European Economic Area. The plates are made in the company’s Continuous Casting Shop (CCS). CCS has two double-strand slab casting machines, producing high-quality slabs of width ranging from 950mm to 1,850mm.

The 4.3-metre-wide new mill of RSP manufactures a wide range of plates conforming to the international standards. The plates produced are utilised in various sectors like railways, bridges, highways and nuclear power plants.

Billet demand drops

On the other hand, demand for Indian billets has slipped as offers from India were at $375 fob and with buyers from South Asia and China were not keen on these prices. For billets with high manganese content, few bids were heard from Indonesia at these offer prices. Indian manufacturers though, find these prices unviable. If distressed, manufacturers may, however, sell at the present bids.
