Russian aluminium producer Rusal has entered a partnership to supply low carbon aluminum to China’s Henan Mingtai Aluminum.
Mingtai is a large-scale aluminum processor with more than 44 production facilities across Asia and a combined output of 1mn mt of rolled aluminum products. Rusal will deliver low carbon aluminum to the Mingtai plants, including the latter’s Gwangyang rolling mill complex in South Korea, which will begin operations in Q3 2021.
The two companies will also collaborate on research and development to produce new alloys with lower carbon footprint. Rusal will produce and deliver low carbon aluminum to Mingtai under its ‘Allow’ brand which uses renewable hydropower to produce the metal.
While Rusal produced 3.7mn mt (5.9pc) of world’s aluminium in 2019 and 7.8mn mt (6.3pc) of world’s alumina in 2019, 90pc of which was produced using clean and renewable hydroelectric power.
