Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

RoadRunner Recycling has resumed its expansion plans after a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pittsburgh-based company raised $29mn for expansion into Phoenix, Arizona, San Diego, California, and Austin, Texas with the potential to set up facilities in seven more cities.

The company uses an application called the FleetHaul to schedule contractors for hauling their recycled goods. The software also seeks to optimize the understanding of clients’ recycling needs and flows depending on volumes and materials produced. According to the company, facilitating logistics for customers by separating product streams could increase recycling volumes to processing entities and reduce landfill loads.

RoadRunner encountered volume changes in different sectors due to the pandemic. The recycler’s residential volumes in some cases have increased while larger volume production sites dropped as projects were delayed or stopped.

The company was founded in 2014 and operates in 10 markets now including, Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Antonio, and Washington, D.C. The technology-driven scrap logistics company employs about 150 people and will double its permanently hired personnel to serve the additional 20 markets being targeted, according to media reports.
