Rio Tinto has declared a force majeure on copper cathode shipments from its Kennecott copper mine in Utah, US following a 5.7 magnitude earthquake last month, according to the media.
Operations at its mine, concentrator and tailings which were temporarily suspended after the earthquake have now resumed. The company is working to restart the smelter.
Rio Tinto’s Kennecott mine accounts for nearly 20pc of the US copper production. The site produced 186,800mt of copper in 2019.
