A certification by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) will help Rio Tinto provide ASI aluminum throughout its global supply chain.

The ASI has given this certification to Rio Tinto’s Amrun and Weipa bauxite mines, its Tarwun alumina refinery, and its Bell Bay and NZAS aluminium smelters.

Rio Tinto is focusing on offering aluminum sourced according to the highest environmental standards also through its joint venture with aluminum producer Alcoa with backing from tech giant Apple. Elysis, the Montreal-based JV produces carbon-free aluminum by using a technology that emits pure oxygen instead of carbon dioxide during the smelting process. Apple recently purchased its first batch of carbon-free aluminum for its products from Eysis.

The technology is expected to be on sale commercially by 2024.

ASI-certified aluminium, known as Performance Standard and Chain of Custody, ensures it is produced according to the highest environmental, social and governance standards, including greenhouse gas emissions and human rights.
