Rio Tinto has awarded a contract to design and construct the Western Turner Syncline Phase 2 (WTS2) at its Tom Price mine in Pilbara, Australia.
Perth-based Mondium—a joint venture between Monadelphous and Lycopodium—has been awarded the A$400mn (US$276mn) contract. The project, which is expected to conclude in 2021, will see the two companies developing, among other site necessities, WTS2’s processing plant, overland conveyor, and non-process infrastructure. The contract is likely to create around 450 jobs this quarter at Rio Tinto’s Tom Price operations in Australia’s Pilbara region.
This past November, an A$1bn investment was approved by Rio Tinto’s board for the Tom Price mine, which includes mining existing and new deposits of iron ore, as well as the construction of a new crusher and a 13km conveyor.
