Pakistan reported a drop in auto production and sales in May compared to the prior month. Sales fell owing to impact of double-digit rate of inflation, according to Pakistan’s auto body, Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA).
Passenger cars
Passenger cars’ production in May dropped 11pc to 12,785 units, while sales fell to 12,934 units, down 10pc from a month ago. Sales and production have both substantially increased over May 2020 due to lockdown and effects of pandemic.
Tractors
Tractor segment reported a drop of 12pc in production at 4,105 units and sales slipped 6pc to 4,211 units in May from April. Compared to May 2020, production is up 15pc and sales is up 127pc.
Trucks
Truck segment was the only one to witness a growth in May. Production rose 34pc to 441 units and sales stood at 395 vehicles, up 19pc. In May 2020, zero trucks were produced and 76 units were sold.
Two- and three-wheelers
Two- and three-wheeler production in May reached 146,576 units, a relatively marginal fall of 8pc over April levels. Sales also fell 8pc to 147,729 units. However, production and sales jumped compared to May 2020 by 326pc and 287pc, respectively.
