Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Increasing copper and aluminium exports from Pakistan has caused raw material disruption in the country’s domestic market. Fahad Rafiq, chairman of the Pakistan Electric Fan Manufacturers Association (PEFMA) recently said that manufacturers of electric fans, utensils, wires, auto parts, kitchenware and die-casting rely on copper and aluminium parts and extrusion scrap material but are encountering severe shortage due to the rise in exports.

PEFMA shared that copper scrap from Pakistan attracts 25pc regulation tax (RD), but no tax is charged in case of export of aluminium ingots and aluminium scrap.

Abdur Razak Dawood, business and investment consultant to Pakistan’s prime minister, has promised to investigate the matter and suggested that companies seek international certification to explore markets abroad.

Dawood suggested manufacturers of electric fans to invest in R&D.

PEFMA shared that the industry lacks competitiveness, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The association requested for the adjustment tax of the export of aluminium ingots so that the export of fans as ‘value-added products’ will not be affected.
