Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Stainless steel producer Outokumpu is conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to expand its Kemi Mine in Finland.

The EIA’s aim is to determine how to optimize existing chrome resources in the mine, not to increase ferrochrome production. The decision to expand the mine is still pending.

Under this expansion idea, the company plans to enlarge the mining concession area, increase ore production volumes, revise its underground mining procedures, and more.

The Key Chromium Mine’s main products are stainless steel and ferrochrome, and it plays a major role in Outokumpu’s production chain. In launching the EIA, the company wants to ensure its production is energy efficient and resource efficient.
