Nucor Steel Brandenburg has broken ground on its $1.3bn steel plate mill in Kentucky, within Buttermilk Falls Industrial Park, which is expected to be commissioned in 2022.
Nucor will employ 1,500 contractors during the period of construction with 400 permanent positions once the steel mill opens. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 1.2mn mt in steel plates. The $826mn Phase I mill expansion at the flat-rolled facility, Nucor Gallatin site was also recently completed. The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) has approved a 15-yr incentive program, leading to new steel investments.
Nucor also operates steel other plants in Kentucky such as DJJ metal recycling facilities, Nucor Tubular Products Louisville, Harris Rebar and Steel Technologies. It has three steel plate mills located in North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas, apart from the Brandenburg facility.
