Phoenix-based electric vehicle manufacturer Nikola has ended its collaboration with Republic Services to build electric trucks for trash collection.

In August, the companies entered an agreement within which Republic, one of the largest waste management companies in the US, would purchase 2,500 units of a new electric garbage truck that the two firms would co-develop. Republic would also have the option to extend the order to 5,000 units under the agreement.

However, on Dec 23, Nikola announced that it discontinued the mass production plans due to unforeseen costs and longer development times.

Nikola plans to begin deliveries of its Tre semi-truck in 2021 within the US and start production of its fuel cell-electric semi-truck in Coolidge, Arizona by 2023.
