Mexico’s long and flat steelmaker Talleres y Aceros (Tyasa), has started operations at its new facility to produce galvanized steel products, to supply the automotive and construction industry.

The new facility, located in Orizaba, Veracruz, will have the capacity to produce an estimated 250,000 tonnes of galvanized sheet and finished products, which will be sold under the brand Galvasteel.

Tyasa has two production facilities in Mexico; one in Orizaba, Veracruz, and the other in Mérida city, Yucatán.The company produces around 450,000mt of billets per annum and has a total capacity to produce around 700,000tonnes of rolled product.

In 2012, Tyasa acquired a 1.2mn tonnes per year steelmaking plant in Orizaba. This plant reduces the specific conversion cost for the electric production of steel by around 20pc. The plant also has the capacity to reduce total carbon dioxide emissions by up to 30pc per ton of crude steel in comparison to conventional electric arc furnaces.
