The Mexican steel industry is being targeted by telephone scammers that seek to make money, Mexico’s steel chamber (Canacero) warned its associates in a statement.

Organized crime rings are posing as Canacero officials to commit telephone fraud, the association added in its alert.

The chamber explained that the people conducting these frauds call steelmakers posing as authorities from Canacero, the Federal Consumer Attorney Office (Profeco) and the Service Tax Administration (SAT), saying that they will visit their facilities to review the steelmakers have corresponding licenses and permits to operate and produce steel.

To develop these revisions, these criminals ask steelmakers for a payment through money transfers to several bank accounts or in cash, Canacero added.

Canacero asked its associates to ignore these calls and notify the chamber, which, in turn, will report this telephone fraud to the authorities.

The chamber did not disclose further details or the names of steelmakers that have suffered from these frauds.
