Mexico’s ferrous scrap imports climbed by 44.5pc to 462,870mt in January-February, from 320,301mt in the same period of 2020, while scrap exports fell by 17.4pc to 101,882mt from 123,347mt in the same period, according to Mexican Customs data.

 

In February, Mexico’s ferrous scrap imports climbed by 31pc to 224,201mt, from 181,747mt in the same month of 2020. Of the total imports, 196,856mt was shipped from the US, 27,000mt from Canada, and 344mt from Belize. Mexican scrap imports in January climbed by 72.2pc to 238,669mt, from 138,554mt in the same month last year.

 

However, Mexican scrap exports fell by 15pc to 53,053mt in February, from 62,138mt in the same prior-year month. Of the total exports, 43,338mt was shipped to the US, 2,979mt to Taiwan, 1,924mt to South Korea, 1,250mt to India, 914mt to Spain, 809mt to Vietnam, 562mt to Japan, 560mt to Thailand, and 165mt to Germany. In January, scrap exports declined to 48,829mt, from 61,209mt in January 2020. 

 

Last year, Mexico imported 2.13mn mt of ferrous scrap, up from 1.47mn mt in 2019, while scrap exports in 2020 reached 718,126mt, down from 841,727mt shipped in 2019.
