Mercedes Benz plans to reopen its Alabama manufacturing facility by April 27, ending a temporary shutdown that has lasted more than a month.

The carmaker had suspended operations at the facility on March 23, but it’s being reopened in tandem with Mercedes Benz’s other plants in Europe later this month, according to media reports. However, the company’s plant in South Carolina, which manufactures Mercedes Benz vans, will remain closed.

The German carmaker’s facility in Alabama produces SUVs for the US market. In Q1 2020 the company sold a total of 67,746 cars, recording a decrease of 4.3pc over the same quarter last year. The company has attributed the fall to COVID-19 related temporary shutdowns at its dealerships in March.
