Russian metal miner Mechel has signed an agreement with the Chelyabinsk government to implement a series of wastewater control measures.
Under this agreement, Mechel-coke will stop discharging water and Chelyabinsk Metallurgical plant will significantly cut down on the discharge. The company will install new cleansing equipment, upgrade recirculating water systems, increasing use of close cycle water and improve efficiency of storm water drainage system, it said in a statement.
Mechel is estimating an investment of close to RUB1.5bn ($19.6mn) for this upgrade at its plants, but will know the exact amount after conducting an ecological audit. The miner has also taken action to reduce air emissions and signed agreement with various government organization for the same.
