Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Japanese carmaker Mazda has kept its full-year forecast for FY2022 (ending March 31, 2022) more or less unchanged from FY2021, mainly because of uncertainties like semiconductor shortage and raw material price volatility. 


The company expects its global sales volume to rise by 9pc to 1.4 million units in FY2022 compared to 1.2 million units in FY2021. Its net sales are anticipated to increase by 18pc to JPY3.4bn ($31mn) in FY2022 compared to JPY 2.8bn in FY2021. 


Mazda’s global sales volume in Q1 FY2022 rose by 45pc to 353,000 vehicles compared to 244,000 vehicles in Q1 FY2021. The company’s Japanese plants sold 7pc more at 28,000 units in Q1 of this fiscal compared to 26,000 during the prior-year quarter period. 


North American sales volume saw a 70pc hike to 138,000 vehicles in the first quarter of FY2022 compared to 81,000 units in the same year-ago quarter. Europe’s sales volume grew by 97pc to 55,000 vehicles in Q1 this year from 28,000 vehicles in the previous year. 


Its sales in China dropped by 23pc to 47,000 vehicles in Q1 of this fiscal from 61,000 units in the same quarter last year while sales in other markets rose by 77pc to 86,000 compared to 48,000 vehicles during the same period under review. 


The firm’s net sales in the first quarter of this fiscal year increased by 113pc to JPY803.4bn compared to JPY376.7bn in Q1 FY2021. 


Mazda’s operating profit rose to JPY26.1bn in Q1 FY2022 compared to a loss of JPY45.3bn in Q1 FY2021.
