Automaker Maruti Suzuki’s May production dropped by 74pc from April owing to lockdown induced shutdown of plants across India. Production stood at 40,924 units in May from 159,955 units produced in the prior month. 

 

Production is up 11-fold in May compared to a year ago, however, in the prior year lockdown was more severe and was nationwide. While this May, production was not completely halted but capacities were reduced amid a shortage of oxygen cylinders. Maruti diverted oxygen required for production for medical needs. 

 

Passenger cars’ production slipped by 73pc to 30,560 units in May from April. Utility vehicle and vans’ production fell by 77pc to 10,680 units and light commercial vehicles’ production stood at 296 units, down by 88pc from a month ago. 

 

Maruti’s auto sales in May slipped by 71pc to 46,555 units compared to the prior month.
