Chinese steelmaker Maanshan Iron and Steel’s production exceeded 20mn mt in 2020 despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The company’s revenues exceeded CNY100bn for the year. Maanshan was acquired by Baowu in 2019, adding significant capacity to the parent company, which produced more than 100mn mt steel in 2020. Annual output rose despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, floods and reduced exports due to weak overseas demand.


Highlights of the year include building China’s first heavy-duty H-beam production line and the world’s largest 45-ton axle load wheel, which successfully cleared assessment and secured large volumes of export orders. 


The company independently developed 635Mpa-class high-strength seismic steel bars for vital domestic projects. With Baowu, Maanshan is developing a series of unique products including rail transit parts, key auto parts, energy core equipment and special steel for high-end manufacturing.


Maanshan invested CNY3bn for preventing pollution of the Yangtze River and water purification projects. The company focused on rectifying outstanding environmental problems on schedule and achieved the ecological protection levels higher than the standard requirement. The company also invested in smart factory and big data projects to promote scientific management. Maanshan claims to have developed 5G smart mine and smart stockyard applications, in addition to strengthening innovation manufacturing cluster around its industrial chain.
