Sales of light vehicles in Mexico increased by 16pc to 680,916 units in January to August period compared to a year ago period, the National Institute of Geography, Statistics, and Informatics (INEGI) reported.

 

In its monthly report on the performance of the automotive industry, INEGI reported that 680,916 light vehicles were sold in the first eight months of the year, up from the 586,594 sold between January and August 2020.

 

In August, sales were 1.4pc higher than last year, reaching 78,235 units from the 77,120 sold in August 2020.

 

Now that the restrictions-related to the pandemic have been lifted, the production of light vehicles in Mexico increased 13pc between January and August to 2.05 million vehicles from 1.81 million in the same period last year.

 

On the other hand, production in August fell by 21pc to 237,040 from the 254,251 units amid the crisis due to a lack of chips.

 

Total exports for the January-August period of this year jumped up by 15pc to 1.81mn vehicles from 1.58mn exported in the first eight months of 2020. On the contrary, in August there was a 20pc drop to 212,687 from 275,081 units exported in the same month a year ago.
