Crude steel production in some Latin American countries such as Brazil and Mexico increased in October while most other countries’ production declined last month. 


Brazil’s crude steel output rose by 3.5pc to 2.7mn mt in October from 2.6mn mt in the same month last year, according to the latest figures released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). Mexico, the second-largest crude steel producer, increased volumes by 1.1pc to 1.47mn mt over 1.45mn mt in the same period.


Argentina’s crude steel output remained flat at 382,000mt in October. On the other hand, Colombia’s production fell by 11.1pc to 110,000mt, from 124,000mt in October 2019. Chile’s crude volumes also saw a reduction of 6.2pc to 105,000mt over 112,000mt in the same period. Meanwhile, Peru’s output was halved to 50,000mt in October, from 101,000mt in the prior year period, and Ecuador’s steel production down by 14pc to 40,000mt in October from 47,000mt in the same month last year.


In total, South American crude steel production rose by 0.4pc to 3.47mn mt in October from 3.46mn mt in the prior year period.
