Steel exports from Latin America to the US fell in January compared to the same month in 2020 on lower demand from the latter for products from Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, according to the US Census Bureau data.
Mexico’s steel exports to the US fell by 1.6pc to 331,229mt last month, from 336,840mt in January 2020 while steel shipments from Brazil during the same period declined by 33.2pc to 758,828mt from 1.1mn mt.
Argentina exported 7,256mt of steel to the US in January, down 24.7pc from 9,646mt shipped the same month in the prior year. Shipments from other South and Central American countries also dropped by 33pc to 772,990mt in January, from 1.15mn mt in the same month of 2020.
Carbon non-alloy steel
Mexican carbon non-alloy steel shipments to the US dropped by 5.2pc to 221,562mt in January from 233,837mt in the same month of 2019. Brazil’s exports of this product dropped by 33.3pc to 596,931mt from 895,667mt during the same timeframe. Argentina’s exports plunged by 97.4pc to 114mt in January, from 4,445mt in the same prior-year period while shipments from South and Central American countries declined by 33.4pc to 603,951mt from 906,983mt in the same period.
Alloy products
Brazil’s exports of alloy steel products to the US declined by 32.4pc to 161,678mt in January, from 238,679mt in the prior-year month. Exports from South and Central American countries dropped by 30.9pc to 168,407mt though shipments from Argentina rose by 37.3pc to 7,142mt from 5,201mt during the same period. Mexican alloy steel exports to the US also climbed by 6.6pc to 106,331mt last month, from 99,744mt in January 2019.
