Korea Steel Shapes (Kosco) is installing a new high-speed rebar rolling mill in Chilseo electric-arc furnace plant in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea.
A melt shop and caster at the mini-mill were installed by Danieli in 2007 and the contractor is now working on expanding the mill’s rebar production capability. Danieli’s direct casting technology will allow for lower energy losses in billet reheating. Alongside a reduction in emissions, the material yield is expected to improve by up to 98pc with a new in-line quenching and self-tempering process. These improvements in yield strength will reduce the cost of production for micro-alloyed elements.
A wider spectrum in bar sized from 10-57mm in diameter will be facilitated by the new rolling mill which has high-speed finishing blocks fed by two-strands. The finishing area will also automate the process of bundling for shipments.
The additional capacity was not identified by either Kosco or Danieli. The former produces steel billets, sections, shaped bars, and flat bars.
