JSW Steel is likely to start production with a revamped rolling mill for long products at its Salem facility. The steel maker issued a Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) to Primetals Technologies, which recently modernised JSW’s facility.

Through the project, Primetal added a new reversing roughing group with rolling stands which will enable to maximise the size of processable blooms to 220m and extend the range of rolled products in terms of size and grade. The technology is also expected to cut down defects, improve productivity and increase metallic yield.

JSW’s Salem facility caters to the auto industry in southern India. It produces blooms, billets, cast iron and rolled long products of over 850 special grades of steel with dimensions ranging between 5.5 and 240 mm. The plant has an annual production capacity of 1mn mt.
