Car sales in Mexico and Brazil—two of Latin America’s biggest auto markets—declined in January, as demand dwindled.

 

Mexican auto sales decreased by 6pc last month to 104,832, as compared with January 2019, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

 

The carmakers with the highest sales were Nissan, up by 20pc, General Motors, up by 15.6pc, and Volkswagen with a 14.6pc growth, the National Automotive Association (Amia) indicated.

 

In Brazil, car sales dropped by 5.6pc to 154,573 units in January 2019, compared with the same month in 2018, according to data released by the National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution.

 

Mexico’s car production decreased by 4.1pc to 3.75mn units in 2019 and exports declined by 3.35pc to 3.3mn units, according to data from Amia.  

 

Brazil’s car output rose by 2.3pc in 2019 to 2.94mn cars, according to figures from the country’s Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea).
