Italy’s iron and steel producers’ association, Federacciai, has welcomed the start of further anti-dumping proceedings into the imports of stainless cold-rolled steel from India and Indonesia.

In a statement on Wednesday, Federacciai president Alessandro Banzato stated that the European market was one where local players operated in an already highly competitive environment while “having to face environmental and energy efficiency restrictions that do not exist in other parts of the world.”

As a result, the European market “has to be protected from the imports of those companies that operate in foreign countries” and do not have to follow the same rules, he added.

India and Indonesia were responsible for approximately 20pc of imports of stainless re-rolled flat products into the EU and 15pc of Italian imports in 2019. The European Commission recently began investigations on cold-rolled flat stainless steel from India after receiving a complaint from European producers that the Asian nation was exporting the material at less than fair value.
