Iran’s Mines and Metals Company (MME) has constructed the first gas-based sponge iron plant in China.
The plant, located in Taiyuan was as built through a deal with China’s CSTM company and has a capacity of 272,155mt.
MME intends to use its Persian Direct Reduction (PERED) technology at the plant. It involves a process that uses natural gas for sponge iron production, which boosts metalization, reduces production costs and fuel use. The technology is currently being used at several Iranian units such as Shadegan Steel, Miyaneh Steel, Neyriz Steel, and Baft Steel companies, according to media reports.
