India’s semi-finished steel exports rose by 528.7pc in June to 991,000mt, compared to the prior year month as domestic demand slumped due to COVID-19 related crisis. China, and countries from Southeast Asia and the Middle East emerged as significant importers of semi-finished steel items as mills in those countries ramped up production.

 

Of the total semis exports, billets accounted for the biggest share with 990,000mt, up by 531.2pc followed by pig iron with 137,000mt, up by 5609pc and sponge iron with 51,000mt.

 

In April-June period, Indian exported 2.27mn mt of semis, up by 362pc, compared to 493,000mt in the prior year period. 

 

Under port wise data, in April-June period, Kolkata Port accounted for the largest share with 452,000mt followed by Paradip Port with 434,000mt and Chennai Port with 113,000mt.
